I provided treatment for my first patient during an internship in October, 1983. Since that time, my training and practice has included many of the methods within the psychodynamic, cognitive and behavioral therapies. Currently, my style of treatment is best described as eclectic and pragmatic.
My experience, based on thousands of hours of clinical practice, is that no single theory or treatment approach is "the best" for everyone. Some styles work better or worse given your unique needs and background. My approach is to draw from the various schools of evidence-based treatments and provide care based on your specific situation. In selecting from a number of types of treatment, my approach is eclectic. And in focusing on what works and is effective for you, my treatment is pragmatic.
Whether dealing with a couple caught up in harsh arguments, a depressed teenager, someone paralyzed by panic in a supermarket or a person with alcohol and drug problems, we will work together to find the strategies that help that specific person with his/her problem and life situation.
During our first session, we will carefully review your history and condition. Then we will explore your goals. Based on those findings, we will develop an individualized treatment plan. In the following sessions, we will work together to achieve your goals.
Each session lasts between 45 and 50 minutes. At the beginning of treatment, sessions are usually scheduled once per week. As you begin to make progress toward your goals, the frequency of sessions is often decreased to once every two weeks.
I tailor the therapy to best match the individual needs and goals of my clients. I do not use a "cookie cutter" or "one size fits all" approach. Your counseling should be individually customized so that it is comfortable to you and, at the same time, is effective in making the changes that you seek.
When we have our first session, a thorough and careful history of your situation and goals is taken. We will discuss the various therapy options available to help you. Together, we select the method and goals of counseling to overcome the obstacles to change and progress in your life.
